My work was visualized by applying the same processes and principles that were used in the creation of dreams. I filled the canvas with all the different stories I experienced in my dreams which were painted and erased repeatedly to deepen, overlap and entwine the time, incidents and narratives which unexpectedly enhanced the time and space shown on the canvas. Drawing the world of the subconscious that cannot be understood by the logic of reality is a very trivial, personal and selfconfessing work. However, to bring out and face the memories that were embedded in the deep subconscious and to visually reinterpret it into human images is to not only experience the possibility of self-purification and healing, but also to reflect the viewer's own subconscious and inner world. / 2014&nbsp; Taemong (Precognitive dream about the birth of a baby) &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;In Korea, there is a very interesting and mysterious belief. It is that before or after the birth of a baby, the parents or people around them have a precognitive dream about the birth of a baby. This is called Taemong and this dream is different from ordinary dreams as extraordinary things happen and diverse kinds of animals or plants appear in the dream. As the content of the dream and animals or plants appearing in the dream have respective meanings, the gender or destiny of a baby that will be born are hinted at based on the Taemong. This belief has been particularly distinct in rice farming regions in Asia. This is because rice farming is labour intensive and so a new arrival in these areas means an increase in workforce, and therefore not only pregnant women but also those who wait for a new labour force would also have unconsciously dreamt Taemong. In fact, Taemong is thought to be a folk story but can also be analyzed by science. From Freud’s point of view, a state of changing body and psychology of a pregnant woman is unconsciously transferred to their current consciousness. The product of this experience started in an agricultural culture in the past and has continued as a popular belief as a custom in today’s culture, even after industrialization. &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The ‘Taemong’ series began with a chat with my mother. She told me that around the time when she had me she had a Taemong in which she was standing on the bank of a river where ice formed here and there between woods on which buds came into flower in spring. When she saw a summer peach floating down the river, which looked very appetizing, she picked it up. Soon after that, a second peach floated down the river and she picked it up but this time the peach was rotten. When she was about to return home, the third peach was floating down from the distance. She hesitated whether to pick it up or not and eventually grabbed it to find that it looked as appetizing as the first one. Not long after the dream, she found out that she was pregnant with me and I was born with the Taemong. This is a typical Tamong story in Korea, but what is surprising starts now. My mother became pregnant two more times after giving birth to me. However, she suffered a miscarriage on her second pregnancy, and when she got pregnant a third time, she was very ill so did not know whether to give birth to the baby. Then, finally she made up her mind to have the baby. When I heard this story, I was very surprised and amazed that the second rotten peach and the third peach that she hesitated whether to pick up or not in her Taemong corresponded with what she experienced in real life. &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Like this, Taemong is too weird and interesting to explain scientifically and I wanted to visualize the moment of a baby being born and recreate it like an album. Interviewing people around me, I collected information about their Taemong stories, personalities, tendencies, and jobs. I brought the properties of dreams to my way of working, which is to let one’s desire to be met or things that were not achieved in real life to be achieved by recombining things like a tree or a clump of grass that were seen somewhere in real world through dreams of the unconscious world. Based on the interviews, I stacked and composed a number of photos from different sources on the computer to create a scene. I did not do anything all day long. I just opened my window, laid down on my bed and looked out and listened to the falling rain until the rain stopped. Around the time when just over a year had passed since I left Korea, I found myself experiencing things that I had not felt before, facing many events at the same time in a new environment, and my incompleteness that made me realize that I was still immature. I continued talking with people and built relationships with them under the names of friend and neighbour, but they could not fill the void of my loneliness and I was a stranger in a foreign land. My identity that I could not harmonize in society and the loneliness from it, and incompleteness from the fact that I could not settle down along with the reality that I would have to leave someday were vented as homesickness. &nbsp; Raindrops gather and form rainwater that is equivalent to society for human beings. To me, the properties of such individual raindrops resemble relationships between people. Although incomplete raindrops fall without knowing their destinations, they establish relationships with one another and they disappear with waves when they land on the ground. However, raindrops that do not harmonize with each other remain as ripples and as such, ripples represent the size of loneliness and pain that individuals have. &nbsp; Falling raindrops are anthropomorphized as human figures and reinterpreted as vague shapes having incomplete and risky properties. I was inspired from my experiences in life and the falling rain, but I wanted to give the feeling of a vague but lively fantasy world instead of showing the shape of a real world. I pasted glass dust above the shape of anthropomorphized raindrops. This is to liken the nature of glass that looks hard but reacts sensitively to little shocks and can be very weak depending on the situation, like human beings. As it was very different from me, I was so confused that I asked myself several times whether it was the real me. From other people, I met another different me each time. With the question of what is the real me, I was confused between my alter ego recognized by others and myself that I had thought of. &nbsp;&nbsp; That we build relationships begins with the fact that we have an effect on each others’ senses. Among many senses, eyes perform a very unique sociological function and this is the connection and interaction between individuals looking at each other. People looking at each other build a direct and indirect relationship and leave extremely subjective traces. &nbsp; John Berger said that they look at me or I look at them, but what is seen is just an image. However, the image is formed by their memories, knowledge or concepts and is very subjective. In other words, an image is exposed by a viewer’s specific eyes as a record. Therefore, a gap between the alter ego recognized by others and my existence remains as a dissonance that cannot be narrowed. &nbsp; I stand on the eyes, the place where an image is first created. However, I cannot be there as I am. As the alter ego recognized by others can never be the same as my existence, it is compromised by a shadow. Like a shadow that reflects its original object but shows a distorted image depending on the direction or intensity of light, I can be a fluid and transmutable existence in others’ eyes.
